Nat King Cole

Nat King Cole

Nat King Cole, born Nathaniel Adams Coles in 1919, was an iconic American singer, jazz pianist, and actor whose career shaped pop and jazz music from the late 1930s through the 1960s. He began as a gifted jazz pianist, founding the influential King Cole Trio, which became Capitol Records' top act in the 1940s and set the standard for small jazz ensembles. In the 1950s, Cole emerged as a pioneering solo vocalist, amassing over 100 charting hits and captivating audiences with timeless classics like "Unforgettable," "Mona Lisa," "L-O-V-E," and "The Christmas Song." Facing significant racial barriers, Cole still broke ground as the first Black American to host a nationally televised variety show with The Nat King Cole Show in 1956. He quietly supported civil rights causes and participated in the 1963 March on Washington. His music, especially his beloved holiday recordings, has endured for generations and received prestigious honors, including a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Nat King Cole’s legacy continues through his recordings and the musical achievements of his daughter, Natalie Cole.
