Suede

Suede

Suede, known as the London Suede in the US, are an English rock band formed in London in 1989 by Brett Anderson, Justine Frischmann, and Mat Osman. Taking influence from glam rock and post-punk, Suede quickly became a key force in British music, earning acclaim as "The Best New Band in Britain" in 1992. Their debut album topped the UK charts, won the Mercury Prize, and played a major role in the rise of Britpop, though the band largely separated themselves from the label. The band underwent major changes during the making of their second album, Dog Man Star, with guitarist Bernard Butler departing and Richard Oakes stepping in. Despite initial mixed commercial results, Dog Man Star is now viewed as a landmark album. In 1996, with the addition of Neil Codling, Suede achieved mainstream success with Coming Up, which produced multiple hit singles and remains their best-selling album. Suede continued to enjoy chart success with later albums like Head Music, though internal struggles and shifting critical response led to a brief split after 2002’s A New Morning. The band reunited in 2010, returning with well-received albums including Bloodsports, Night Thoughts, and The Blue Hour. Their ninth album, Autofiction, arrived in 2022, and a tenth, Antidepressants, is expected in 2025. Suede remain an influential and evolving force in British rock music.
