Sparks

Sparks

Sparks is an American pop and rock duo formed by brothers Ron and Russell Mael in Los Angeles in 1971. Known for their quirky songwriting, witty and sometimes satirical lyrics, and theatrical stage presence, Sparks pairs Russell’s dynamic vocals with Ron’s intricate keyboard work. The band’s ever-evolving sound has embraced glam, disco, new wave, synth-pop, and orchestral pop, keeping them at the forefront of innovative pop music for decades. Among their best-known songs are the glam rock anthem This Town Ain't Big Enough for Both of Us, a UK chart hit, and the disco classics The Number One Song in Heaven and Beat the Clock. Collaborations with artists like Giorgio Moroder and Jane Wiedlin have marked major shifts in their career. Their 2002 album Lil' Beethoven was praised for its inventive orchestration, launching a new phase of critical acclaim. Sparks’ influence and legacy have been explored in the documentary The Sparks Brothers and through their work on the musical film Annette, which earned them a César Award. Recent albums such as The Girl Is Crying in Her Latte and Mad have brought them back to the UK Top 10, highlighting their enduring popularity and creative spirit.
