David John Matthews, born in 1967 in Johannesburg, South Africa, is best known as the lead vocalist, songwriter, and guitarist for Dave Matthews Band. Raised across South Africa, the UK, and the US, he began playing acoustic guitar at nine. Matthews formed Dave Matthews Band in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 1991. The group rose from local shows to become one of North America's most successful touring acts, known for energetic live performances and unique blends of rock, jazz, and folk. The band set a Billboard record with seven consecutive studio albums debuting at number one, including Away from the World and Come Tomorrow. Matthews has also pursued solo work and occasional acting. His accolades include two Grammy Awards—one with the band for So Much to Say, and one as a solo artist for Gravedigger.
