Daniel Dumile, known professionally as MF Doom or simply DOOM, was a British-American rapper, songwriter, and producer recognized for his complex lyrics, iconic metal mask, and supervillain image. Born in London and raised in New York, he began his career in the late 1980s with the hip hop group KMD. After the group disbanded following the death of his brother, Dumile reinvented himself in the late 1990s, adopting his masked MF Doom persona and gaining underground acclaim. In the 2000s, DOOM became a central figure in alternative and underground hip hop with critically acclaimed albums like Operation: Doomsday, Mm..Food, and the highly regarded Madvillainy, his collaboration with Madlib. He also released music as King Geedorah and Viktor Vaughn, and worked with artists like Danger Mouse, Jneiro Jarel, Bishop Nehru, and Czarface. Despite spending most of his life in the United States, Dumile was denied reentry in 2010 and settled in the UK, where he continued to collaborate with others. He passed away in Leeds in 2020. MF Doom is remembered as one of hip hop's most inventive, enigmatic, and influential figures.
