Hayato Sumino, born in Tokyo in 1995, is a celebrated Japanese pianist and composer recognized for his interpretations of Chopin. Beginning piano at age three, he later combined his passion for music with advanced studies in science and engineering at the University of Tokyo, where he earned a master's degree and received the President's Award. Sumino has achieved major competition successes, including the Grand Prix at the PTNA Piano Competition and third prize at the Lyon International Piano Competition. In 2021, he reached the semifinals of the International Chopin Piano Competition, drawing record online audiences to his performances. Also known as "Cateen" on YouTube, he has built a large online following for his innovative content. Sumino is a Steinway Artist and continues to bridge classical tradition with contemporary creativity.
