Iron Butterfly was a rock band from San Diego, California, formed in 1966. They are most famous for their 1968 hit In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, which became a landmark in the evolution of hard rock and heavy metal. Known for their dramatic sound, the band blended heavy riffs with psychedelic and acid rock elements, creating extended jams and intense musical explorations. Their second album, also titled In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, became a best-seller and earned them the distinction of being the first band to receive an in-house platinum award from Atlantic Records. Though their peak was in the late 1960s, Iron Butterfly has reunited several times with different line-ups but has not released new material since 1975.
