James Todd Smith, born January 14, 1968, is better known as LL Cool J, an influential American rapper and actor. As one of the first hip hop artists to achieve major commercial success, he helped pave the way for new school rap alongside acts like Beastie Boys and Run-DMC. Signed to Def Jam in 1984, LL Cool J broke through with "I Need a Beat" and his debut album Radio. His career includes acclaimed albums like Bigger and Deffer, Mama Said Knock You Out, and Mr. Smith, as well as his latest release The FORCE in 2024. LL Cool J is celebrated for classic hip hop tracks such as "Rock the Bells", "Mama Said Knock You Out", and "Going Back to Cali", along with R and B hits like "I Need Love" and "Hey Lover". Beyond music, he has enjoyed a successful acting career, appearing in films such as Deep Blue Sea and Any Given Sunday, starring in the NCIS television franchise, and hosting Lip Sync Battle. He is a two-time Grammy winner, was the first rapper to receive the Kennedy Center Honors, and is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
