Japan was an English new wave band formed in 1974 in Catford, South London by David Sylvian, Steve Jansen, and Mick Karn, later joined by Richard Barbieri and Rob Dean. Starting with glam rock influences, they evolved into a group known for their art rock style, electronic elements, and distinct androgynous image. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Japan found commercial success with several UK top 40 hits, most notably "Ghosts" and the live album Oil on Canvas. Despite rising popularity, the band disbanded in 1982. The members later reunited briefly as Rain Tree Crow in the early 1990s.
