The Smashing Pumpkins are an influential American alternative rock band formed in Chicago in 1988 by Billy Corgan, James Iha, D'arcy Wretzky, and Jimmy Chamberlin. Known for their rich, layered sound that blends elements of alternative rock, grunge, heavy metal, gothic, psychedelic, and electronic music, the band became a defining act of the 1990s. Their early albums, including Gish, Siamese Dream, and Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, earned critical acclaim and major commercial success, with the latter reaching Diamond certification and debuting at number one on the Billboard charts. Despite internal tensions and lineup changes, Corgan has remained the creative force behind the band. After a brief breakup at the turn of the millennium, the group reunited in 2006 and continued to evolve, releasing new material and touring with various configurations. Today, the band features Corgan, Iha, and Chamberlin. The Smashing Pumpkins have sold over 30 million albums worldwide and are recognized for their innovative approach and significant impact on the alternative rock scene, continuing to release new music, including their 2024 album Aghori Mhori Mei.
